Pool Deck Too Hot to Walk On in Lakewood Ranch?

Why some Lakewood Ranch pool decks burn bare feet by July, which surfaces run cooler according to the people who make them, and what each fix costs.

A pool deck too hot to walk on in Lakewood Ranch is almost always a color or coating problem, not the slab: dark colors, deck paint and glossy films hold the heat, while a light textured topping stays cooler underfoot. The usual fix is a light cool deck coating at about $4 to $7 a square foot, and Lakewood Ranch Pool Deck Co handles that recoat along with the paint stripping and crack repair that come first.

Why a Pool Deck Gets Too Hot to Walk On in Lakewood Ranch

The sun does most of the work. At the Sarasota-Bradenton airport, the closest official weather station, July's average high is 91.5 F and the yearly average high is 83.3 F, and the UV index routinely reaches Very High to Extreme on the EPA scale through the summer. A deck in the open part of the yard, outside the cage roof's shade, takes that sun all afternoon.

What the deck is covered with decides how much of it you feel. Three things make a deck hotter, and all three are common on decks that have been "refreshed" cheaply:

  • Paint over a cool deck. Mortex says its Systex deck paint "Does NOT provide cooling properties" and that on a Kool Deck surface "the area will become hotter and slicker."
  • Darker colors. Mortex's brochure says its Designer Colors are "darker and therefore warmer" than standard Kool Deck colors, even though they still beat plain concrete.
  • A smooth film on top. Paint and glossy sealers fill the texture that keeps feet off the hottest surface and add slip risk when wet.

Which Pool Deck Surfaces Run Cooler

No independent lab has tested these side by side, so the table says who makes each claim. Prices are 2026 published Florida figures for a deck that is already concrete.

Fixes for a Hot Pool Deck, Cheapest First

  1. Strip the paint or glossy film. If a cool deck was painted, the paint is the heat problem. It has to come off before anything bonds, so ask for removal as its own line on the quote.
  2. Recoat in a light color. A Kool Deck or spray knockdown recoat over the sound slab, about $2,400 to $4,200 for 600 sq ft. Pick from the lighter standard colors; the darker ones run warmer by Mortex's own account.
  3. Seal without a film. On Kool Deck and natural stone a penetrating siloxane such as Mortex Protect-A-Deck leaves no coating to heat up or get slick. On pavers, a matte water-based sealer with anti-slip grit, resealed every two to three years, is the usual choice; see paver sealing.
  4. Remodel to light travertine. 3 cm travertine set over the old slab costs several times a recoat and raises the deck at the lanai door, but lasts decades. See travertine pool decks.
  5. Shade the hottest strip. An umbrella or shade sail over the path from the door to the steps costs least of all and helps whatever the surface.

Skip a fresh coat of paint as the cure. It is the cheapest option on paper, but on a cool deck it is the one change Mortex says makes the surface hotter, and paint on a pool deck wears fastest where feet go. The pool deck painting page covers when paint is still the right job.

Cooler Without Losing Grip

A cooler deck should not be a slicker one. Mortex describes Kool Deck as non-skid even when wet, and SUNDEK lists its texture as slip-resistant; both keep their grip only while the texture stays open. SEK-Surebond recommends an anti-slip additive in its paver sealer around pools and warns that extra coats can be slippery. On a remodel to pavers, ask for a natural or matte finish rather than a wet look.

When to Book the Work

The deck feels hottest in summer, but summer is the hardest time to recoat it. Kool Deck goes on between 50 F and 90 F with no rain forecast, and Encore's COOL! coating between 55 F and 83 F with no rain for 24 hours. Nearly two-thirds of the Tampa Bay area's rain falls June through September, so a job booked for the drier months from late October to May has the easiest weather, and the deck is ready before the next summer.

Hot Pool Deck Questions

How do you keep a pool deck cool in Florida?

Give it a light, textured, unpainted surface. Mortex says its Kool Deck topping significantly lowers the surface temperature of concrete, and it warns that its own deck paint makes a Kool Deck surface hotter and slicker. If the deck is already a cool deck, strip any paint or glossy film and recoat in a light color; if it is bare or painted concrete, a cool deck recoat is the usual fix.

What is the coolest pool deck surface?

No independent test compares them all, so treat every number as the seller's. Mortex and SUNDEK both say their textured toppings stay cooler than plain concrete, Encore claims up to 38% cooler for its COOL! coating, and HomeGuide says travertine stays 20% to 30% cooler than concrete without citing a test. What all of them agree on: light colors and an unpainted, textured surface.

Does a darker Kool Deck color run hotter?

Yes. Mortex's own brochure says its Designer Colors are darker and therefore warmer than standard Kool Deck colors, while still being more comfortable than plain concrete in summer. If heat is the complaint, pick from the lighter standard colors.

Are pavers cooler than a concrete pool deck?

It depends on the color more than the material. There is no published heat figure for concrete pavers; light pavers behave like light concrete and dark ones run hot. Travertine is the stone most often sold as cool underfoot, and it costs about $18 to $28 a square foot installed in Florida.

Will sealing my pool deck make it hotter?

A film-forming or painted finish is the risk, not sealing itself. Mortex warns that painting Kool Deck makes it hotter and slicker; for Kool Deck and natural stone a penetrating siloxane that leaves no film is the usual sealer, and on pavers a matte water-based sealer with grit avoids the slick wet-look finish.
